A brief history of the St. Matthew's Cub Pack
The following brief history was written, presumably, by one of the Cub Leaders around the late 40's, early 50's. It was type-written with some pencil notes which are not very legible. Typewritten at the bottom it states, "This is about all I can find out from my Log Books".
There are also some hand-written notes in red ink which appear to be those of Mrs. Jean Hinman (formerly Miss Jean Wilkins - Cub Master from 1931), a real stalwart of the St. Matthew's Group with many years of service both as a leader and a valued committee member.
The Cub Pack was started by Mr. Gratton of Dunedin in March 1928. He left us after a few months and Messrs. Keith Pryor and Don Stanton carried on. The Pack grew to 20 boys before Mr. Pryor left Ch.Ch. when Mr. Stanton carried on doing a great job. When he left in 1929 Miss Joyce Peat took over and the numbers were then 25. She did a great job, and ran the Pack for 18 months on her own. 1930 saw Miss Joanne Lynskey as C.M. with Miss Pat Scott-Baker as Assistant. These two officers did very well with the Pack, which had grown to over 35 in number and taken part in a great camp at Spencerville. In 1931 Miss Jean Wilkins took Miss Scott-Bakers place. Then in December 1931 Miss Lynskey left to take up nursing leaving Miss Wilkins as Acting C.M. and Miss Carol Barr and Mr. Alan Stanton as A.C.M.s. During 1932 Miss Barr and Mr. Stanton both left and Miss Betty Pine came to help Miss Wilkins with the Pack. Miss Pine stayed 14 months with the Pack and then her place was taken by Miss Rita Shorland. Misses Wilkins and Shorland did wonderful work for 3 years and the Pack did very well in every way including sport. About this time Miss Shorland left and was replaced by Mr. Frank Dixey. In 1937 Miss Wilkins left the Pack in the capable hands of Miss Joyce Watson, until l941 when Miss Watson left and Mrs. Hinman (formerly Miss Wilkins) returned to take up the work again, with Mrs. Parish as assistant. At this stage our numbers grew so much that a new No. 2 Pack was formed. Mrs. Hinman taking No. 1 Pack of 36 boys and Miss Irene Henden No. 2. Pack of 18 boys. The Cubs took part in all National Service work undertaken by the Movement, and also assisted with a very successful Group concert. With Mrs. Hinman’s departure in Dec (1949 or could be 1947, hard to read) No.1. Pack was run for a short while by Messrs. P. & J. Sommerfield, until the two Packs were reunited under Miss Henden, with Miss J. Sommerfield as Assistant.
