The Fuller Fire Banner
The Odeon Theatre in Christchurch has not always been named thus. It has had many names, and was originally the Tuam St. Public Hall when it opened in 1877.
In 1903 it was taken over by the successful performance chain of Fuller's, and renamed Fuller's Vaudeville House. At some point during this time (possibly between 1917-1918, when it is known that the building underwent refurbishment) there was a fire in the building, and Christchurch Boy Scouts helped put the blaze out. In appreciation a banner or flag was donated to the Scouts to be competed for annually. Viewing the attached image shows the kind of competition it was.
St. Matthew's won the event for the very first time in 1944, and this is indicated in the Committte notes of July 31st 1944.

The competition is still held, although the original banner, along with the history and all the winning Troops, is now held by the National Scout Museum at Blue Skies.
As a side note, the Odeon narrowly escaped demolition recently and is currently in the hands of a developer who wishes to restore the old building to its former glory. Information on it can be found here.
