Scoutmasters & Assistant Scoutmasters
While the Group records are, most unfortunately, incomplete - we do have a good idea of those who served as Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters during the periods when good records were kept. This list is assembled from what records we have and other sources (linked and / or noted where possible) Some information has been obtained from the "Clergy in the Diocese of Christchurch 1890 - 1925" directory by Michael Blain (1994), held by the Anglican Archives in Christchurch.
Note: C.S.M = Chief Scoutmaster, S.M. = Scoutmaster, A.S.M. = Assistant Scoutmaster
Rev. Edward Edwards, C.S.M. 1909 - 1911 (estimated)
The Reverend Edwards was probably our first Scoutmaster. There is a fairly thorough research page on Edward here.
Flanagan, C.S.M. 1911 - ?
Nothing known other than he took over from Rev. Edwards and had the Troop at one point holding a local record for Kings Scouts and proficiency badges (Dominion Scout, May 1st 1911).
J. A. Clarke, S.M. 1911 - ?
Referred to in the Dominion Scout, October 2nd 1911. Nothing is known other than the Troop was running in close competition against the Oxford Terrace Troop for the "coveted Kings Prize".
R. Fox, S.M. ?-1914-?
Referred to in the Avonside Parish Flyer in October 1914. Apparently doing a good job of strengthening the Troop in every way and getting it out of debt (Iperhaps the debt was in the form of loans to buy equipment such as tents?). Notes around this time also indicate that perhaps the Troop has declined from its early days but is on its way up again.
-- A large hole in the records exists here, as no Scouting periodicals were issued, and only limited records have been found, mainly the Avonside Parish Flyer --
Donald M. Brown, C.S.M. 1917 - 1920
Avonside Troop Chief Scoutmaster. Worked at the Grocery Dept. of the N.Z. Farmers Co-op according to the letter that he wrote to the Lady Liverpool. Chief Scoutmaster Brown was responsible for the L.L.O. title being bestowed upon the Troop, and according to Lt. Col. Cossgrove was a man who thought of the Troop first and himself second.
Don. Richardson, A.S.M. 1918 - 1920, S.M. 1920 - 1921
Avonside Troop Assistant Scoutmaster, then Scoutmaster
James Curwen Robinson, A.S.M. 1920 - 1921, S.M. 1921 - 1923
From records, Mr. Robinson was the Scoutmaster of the Avonside Troop that came to become St. Matthew's Troop (LLO). He was the A.S.M. from 1920-21 (Avonside Troop), and the S.M. from 1921 - 1923 (Avonside & St. Matthew's). Mr Robinson is listed as being present at the first committee meeting of the new St. Matthew's Troop.
A. V. Belsten S.M. 1923 - 1924
Appointed to take over the Troop and by all reports ran and grew the troop extremely well until he resigned in March 1924.
Walter Olliver, A.S.M. 1923 - 1928, S.M. (Acting) 1924 - 1925, 1927 - 1928
Troop leader, promoted to Acting Scoutmaster in the absence of a SM
Frank E. Hutchinson, S.M. 1926 - 1927
Joined the Troop as SM in Feb 1926. Ex lecturer in forestry at Canterbury College. Very outdoorsy and a great asset to the Troop until his resignation in Jan 1928 to take the position of Asst. Commissioner for Chch.

Albert Scott, A.S.M. 1927-27, S.M. (Acting) 1927

Peter Shallard - Obtained from a Press article dated 4th July, 1957: "The present Scoutmaster , who is carrying on alone, is Mr Peter Shallard, a former Scout in the Troop". This article was calling for new Scoutmasters or suggesting the Troop would need to be shut down.
